Clashes in Pakistan after TLP takes several police hostage

Lahore: There were clashes between members of the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and police on the Multan Road in Lahore, killing some group supporters and injuring more than 100. Sources said 11 police officers were injured in the clash, including a deputy superintendent of police and others held hostage by rioters. Some TLP members have reportedly been killed in Markaz, but so far only two deaths have been confirmed.

In addition, TLP leaders say that members killed in the conflict will not be buried until their demands are met.

“The TLP may begin its long march this evening, which will further weaken the law and order situation,” a source said.

The clashes began on Sunday morning when members of the banned group gathered outside the party’s Sadar office and raised slogans against the arrest of its chief Saad Hussain Rizvi.

The source said that violent clashes erupted between TLP protesters and police and other security agencies at 8:30 am at Chowk Yatim Khana in Lahore’s stronghold of TLP.
