Meerut, 18th July 2018: Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, a leading healthcare provider in North India, showcased several interesting and awe-inspiring cases of cancer survivors from the region today.

Max Hospital has been conducting regular OPDs in Meerut for over two years, as part of their out-reach program and making a marked difference in cancer treatment.

Dr. Meenu Walia, Director- Medical Oncology & Haematology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, addressed the gathering and shed light on the growing incidence of cancer amongst women in tier II cities.

She has over 15 years of experience in the field of medical oncology and haematology and is the first DNB medical oncologist of India.

Dr. MeenuWaliahas been leading OPDs in the region and has successfully treated on several critical cancer patients here.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Walia said“Cancer cases have shown a rapid increase in the past decade. This is both owing to better diagnosis and actual rise in incidents. However, it is a very curable disease, provided they get diagnosed at an early stage. Treatment in advanced stages in patients can involve multiple modalities of treatment and chances of reduced post-treatment life expectancy. We have been treating several challenging and complex cases of cancer from this, which validates their growing trust in our services and care.”

Present at the press conference was Kailash Hans, an 80-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with cancer of the right breast and her Pet CT showed locally advanced disease. She had so many co morbid conditions that she was declared unfit for surgery. She was started on   hormonal and targeted therapy and today the disease has significantly reduced and she can carry all her normal activities as earlier.

To break myths that cancer affects the geriatric population most, Dr Walia presented the case study of Kiran Bisht (39) who was diagnosed with cancer in the left breastand underwent a successful surgery at patparganj.

Dr Walia elaborated that women in the Indian set, are mostly ignorant about their health and hence a lump or a small lesion (indicative of early stages of cancer on most occasions) often go unnoticed.

“Clubbed with a general ignorance of a self-examination which can play a crucial role and being observant of past family history of cancer can play a pivotalrole in early diagnosis of this disease,” added Dr Walia.

She emphasised that post-operative regular follow ups are an important part of patient care and must not be neglected.

“These patients have had immense family support which cannot be compensated and their individual will power have helped them become disease free, alongwith the advanced care we provide across all Max Hospitals,” she emphasised.

Pooja Gupta, 42, too had a similar breast tumor which was treated successfully by her. She also had a past history of multiple problems – TIA, Carotid vein thrombus, Hypothyroidism. In-spite of so many multiple problems, she successfully underwent surgery in April 2016 followed by chemotherapy and currently she is on Hormonal Therapy.
