Central government may reconsider the cost of Covaxin vaccine

New Delhi: The central government may reconsider the cost of covaxin being used in the country against the corona virus. Dr. VK Paul, Member (Health) of NITI Aayog and head of the National Covid-19 Task Force, told a news channel that the central government is paying Rs 150 for a dose of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, which will be reconsidered.

While interacting with news channel Dr. Paul said that at what cost the vaccine manufacturer gives the vaccine to the private sector, it is for him to decide. At present, Bharat Biotech was providing the vaccine of Covid-19 vaccine to the central government for Rs 150 to the central government, Rs 400 to the state governments and Rs 1,200 to private hospitals.

In its recent statement, the company had said that to cover the cost of the vaccine, it is required to sell the vaccine to the private sector at a higher price. The company justified the higher cost of Covaxin vaccine than other vaccines, saying that the low cost of procurement and distribution, along with other fundamental reasons, make the Covaxin vaccine expensive.
