Parrikar had explained his decision to run for office independently of Panaji, saying, “For some reason, I was unable to secure the Panjim nomination; instead, it was given to someone who joined the party opportunistically in the last two years. Due to the circumstances, I now have no choice but to choose the ideals instilled in me by my father and proceed to decide my political fate. As a result, I’d like to declare that I’ll be running as an independent candidate in Panaji.”
