New Delhi: During the hearing of a case, the Supreme Court said that people are dying due to lack of oxygen, so why is the Tamil Nadu government not making oxygen there by acquiring Vedanta’s Sterlite copper unit located in Tuticorin. This plant has been locked since May 2018 due to pollution related concerns.
The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde said that it does not make sense to run this plant by Vedanta or else, it only means that oxygen should be produced. Justice LN Rao and Justice SR Bhat said that in this case one has to give concrete answer as people are dying due to lack of oxygen.
The Supreme Court bench said these things while hearing Vedanta’s petition. Vedanta has filed a petition in the court seeking approval to open his Sterlite Copper Unit at Tuticorin on the basis that it can make thousands of tons of oxygen here and make it available for the treatment of patients free of cost. While approving the hearing of Vedanta’s petition, the Supreme Court on Thursday had termed the corona epidemic as the state of national emergency.
