Misri graduated from Gwalior’s Scindia School and went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree in History with honours from Hindu College, University of Delhi, as well as an MBA from XLRI, Jamshedpur. He worked in the private sector for three years in the sectors of advertising (Lintas India in Bombay and Contract Advertising in Delhi) and advertising film-making before joining the government.

He is proficient in Hindi, English, and Kashmiri, and has a basic understanding of French. From November 1996 until April 1997, he was Under Secretary in the Office of India’s External Affairs Minister, I.K. Gujral, and then became Gujral’s Private Secretary after he became Prime Minister in April 1997.

Before becoming the PS to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he worked as a Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office from March to October 2012. From November 2006 to September 2008, he was the Director of the Office of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee. This was the time when the nuclear accord between India and the United States was being discussed.

Among other nations, he has served in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the United States, Myanmar, Brussels, and Spain. From August 2000 until September 2003, he served as First Secretary/Counsellor/C.d’A in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, during the days of the Parliament assault, Op Parakram, and the Agra summit.

From September 2003 to October 2006, he served as Political Counsellor at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., where he was involved in major shifts in the Indo-US relationship, from the Vajpayee government’s Next Steps in Strategic Partnership to the closer strategic ties between the Manmohan Singh government and the George W Bush administration.

Misri has held positions as India’s Deputy High Commissioner in Sri Lanka (September 2008–September 2011), Consul General of India in Munich (September 2011–February 2012), Ambassador of India to Spain (August 2014–August 2016), and Ambassador of India to Myanmar (August 2014–August 2016). (August 2016 to December 2018).
