Luizinho Faleiro, the former chief minister of Goa and the AITC’s recently appointed national vice-president, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the party on Saturday. The Mamata Banerjee-led party announced the decision on Twitter, writing: “We are really happy to nominate @luizinhofaleiro to the Upper House of Parliament.” We are optimistic that his efforts to serve the country will be fully recognised by our people!”

Before joining the TMC, Faleiro had left the Congress and resigned as an MLA on September 29. “Former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro has dedicated his political career to the development of people for almost four decades. “We have complete trust in his ability to lead AITC to greater heights and to continue the battle to preserve every Indian citizen’s democratic right,” the TMC said in a statement at the time of his appointment.

As part of its national growth strategy, the TMC has entered the political fray in Goa, deciding to run alone in the election set for early next year. The party has dubbed its campaign for the Goa elections in 2022 “Goenchi Navi Sakal” (Goa’s New Dawn), and has brought in heavyweights like as Derek O’Brien, Babul Supriyo, and Sougata Roy to help build the party. Leander Paes, a tennis legend, recently joined the Trinamool Congress, claiming that he wants to make a difference in society by opposing all attempts to divide it along religious and ethnic lines.
