Meerut zone cybercrime cell revealed the case
Case filed against Chinese company and service center
Meerut: A case of 13,500 mobile phones running from an IMEI number has come out in Meerut. This has been revealed in the investigation of the cyber crime cell of Meerut Zone Police.
The investigation has claimed that about 13.5 thousand mobiles are running across the country with an IMEI number. In this case, by registering a case of fraud against China’s Vivo company and its service center, the medical police station of Meerut has started investigation. This is considered a huge lapse of the company in terms of internal security.
In fact, Sub Inspector Asharam, posted in the office of Additional Director General of Police, Meerut, had a Vivo company mobile. When the screen broken, he gave mobile on 24 September 2019 at Vivo’s service center on Delhi Road in Meerut. By changing the battery, screen and FM, the service center handover them mobile. A few days later, an error started appearing on the display. The then ADG Prashant Kumar directed the investigation of Cyber Crime Cell in-charge of Meerut Zone Police, Prabal Kumar Pankaj and Cyber Experts Vijay Kumar. The investigation found that the IMEI written on Asharam’s mobile box is different from the IMEI present in the mobile. On 16 January 2020, the service center manager replied that the IMEI was not changed. That mobile had a SIM of the Jio company, so the cyber cell sent the said IMEI number to the telecom company and asked for the data. From there came a report that on 24 September 2019 from 11 am to 11:30 am, the same IMEI is running in 13557 mobiles of different states of the country.
The cyber cell gave notice under the 91 CrPC to Harmanjeet Singh, the nodal officer of Vivo India in the whole case. The police was not satisfied with the response to the notice. He could not even tell that according to which rules of TRAI, an IMEI is active on more than one mobile number. The cyber cell has admitted that the gross negligence of the mobile company in this case and violation of TRAI rules.
According to ADG Rajiv Sabarwal, a few years ago the Chinese phone used to have same IMEI number. This was a threat in terms of security. Therefore, the Government of India blacklisted all the numbers. After this, the rules of TRAI came into force. Under this, an IMEI can be given to only one mobile.
Rajeev Sabarwal, ADG Meerut Zone, says that a complaint was investigated in this case. It turned out that an IMEI is running in several thousand mobiles. It is a violation of rules. There is also a danger in terms of security. If a crime occurred with that IMEI mobile, we will not be able to catch the culprit. A case has been filed in the case. Will talk to the company how it happened.
