There is no justification for 50 overs cricket right now: Shastri

Date:

Wellington: The Indian team, who went on a tour to New Zealand, may have lost the ODI series 0-3 but the Indian team is not too worried about it and its focus is now on the upcoming Test series. Before the start of the two-Test series, coach Ravi Shastri said, “There is no justification for 50 overs cricket right now.” Right now the T20 series matters, which we have won 5-0 and the upcoming Test series counts, whose matches will be played in Wellington and Christchurch.

Shastri said, ‘We still need 100 points to play at Lord’s (the final of the World Test Championship). If we win 2 out of 6 overseas Tests then we will be in a good position. This year we will play 6 Tests overseas (2 in New Zealand and 4 in Australia). So, our aim is that we play here like the No. 1 Test team, because our team believes in this more than anything else and in the Test we are playing on this basis.

The head coach is excited by the arrival of young players in the team. Prithvi Shaw is returning to the Test team and there is speculation about Shubman Gill that he might get a chance to debut here. Shastri, while answering the question asked on these two players, said, ‘Both players are rich in supreme talent. It is not special that who will be playing in both of these XIs in Wellington, especially that they are both here and are part of the Indian national team.
