State governments will pay fare and food for migrant labourers: Supreme court

New Delhi: In the case of migrant laborers, the Supreme Court on Thursday said that no fare of train or bus should be taken from the laborers, the state government should pay the fare. Along with this, it was also said that the state government should give food to those who are trapped there. Information should be sent to them where help is available.

The Supreme Court in its judgment said that no train or bus fare would be charged from migrant workers. The court said that all the migrant workers stranded at various places will be provided food at those places by the respective state and union territories. Apart from this, the workers will also be told the time to board the train or buses.

Also, the court asked the states and union territories to publicize the place and duration to provide food to the stranded migrant laborers.

A bench of Justice Ashok Bhushan, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice MR Shah sought information from Solicitor General Tushar Mehta about the confusion over payment of fare for the journey of these stranded workers at various places. The bench said that these workers should not be asked to pay the rent for their return journey home.

The bench asked Mehta, “What is the normal time? If a migrant is identified, it must be certain that he will be delivered within a week or ten days? What time is it? There are also instances when one state sends migrants but on the border of another state they are told that we will not take migrants, we need a policy on this. “

The bench asked questions about the hire of these workers and said, “There is always a middleman in our country.” But we do not want there to be a middleman when it comes to the payment of freight. There should be a clear policy on who will bear the expenses of their travel. ”Earlier, at the commencement of the hearing, the Solicitor General presented the preliminary report of the Center and said that these workers should be taken from May 1 to 27. A total of 3,700 special trains were run and many workers were transported by road in the border states. He said that about 91 lakh migrant workers have been transported to their ancestral homes by Wednesday.
