Sidhu Quits as Punjab Congress Chief

Navjot Singh Sidhu, a Congress politician, resigned as head of the party’s Punjab branch on September 28. His departure occurs around two months after assuming the position. Sidhu, allegedly dissatisfied with several of the new state Cabinet’s selections, tendered a letter of resignation to Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Sidhu stressed that while he is stepping down as PCC chairman, he would remain a party member.

“Will continue to serve the Congress,” the politician-turned-cricketer said. On July 18, Sidhu, embroiled in a tumultuous intra-party conflict with former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, was named PCC chairman. His promotion was viewed as an insult to the then-chief minister, Amarinder Singh. Singh resigned as Punjab chief minister just weeks after Sidhu took the head of the Congress’ Punjab branch.

Charanjit Singh Channi, a famous Dalit face of the Congress in Punjab, was finally chosen as Amarinder Singh’s successor by the Congress high command. Sidhu’s resignation as PCC chairman occurs on the same day that Amarinder Singh arrives in Delhi.

While speculation regarding Singh’s next political move abounds, his media advisor Raveen Thukral tweeted that the former chief minister is in the capital on a “personal visit.” “He’s on a personal tour to see some friends and leave Kapurthala House for the next Chief Minister. There’s no use in speculating if you don’t have to “Thukral said.
