Rampage on Red Fort, Congress demands Shah’s resignation

New Delhi: Indian National Congress on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah for allegedly failing to control the violence on the streets of national capital on the Republic Day.

“Its a huge colossal security lapse and intelligence failure on part of none other than Home Minister Amit Shah. He should be sacked without delay,” Congress Chief Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said adding that this is the second time in less than a year, that under Mr Shah’s leadership the national capital Delhi has been pushed to the brink of “unabated, unchecked and uncontrolled violence.”

Terming Mr Shah as the “weakest Home Minister” in the history of the India, the Congress spokesperson said that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not sack him then it will be apparent that PM himself was part of the concerted conspiracy to malign the farmers movement.

“Did Mr Shah not know about the open declaration over last 24-48 hours by these violent and anti-social elements who segregated themselves from the farmers and expressed their desire that they are going up the Red Fort?,” Mr Surjewala questioned.

He also accused the Modi government of being the only government in the past 75 years for failing to protect the iconic Red Fort.

On Tuesday, Republic Day celebration in the National Capital was marred by the violence as thousands of farmers protesting against the agriculture reforms breached the security cordon at the borders and clashed with police, resulting in death of one farmer and injury of over 300 policemen. The exact number of injured farmers is yet to be determined.

After barging in the Capital, hundreds of protestors managed to reach and enter the Red Fort breaching police security and planted a religious and farm union flag on the pole where Tri-Colour is hoisted on Independence Day. The flag was later removed and the area cleared by the police.
