Following the retirement of incumbent Admiral Karambir Singh, Admiral R Hari Kumar assumed command of the Indian Navy on Tuesday. Outgoing Chief Admiral Karambir Singh, who resigned on superannuation after a 41-year career in the Navy, was succeeded by Kumar as the 25th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS).
Prior to commanding the army, Admiral Kumar was the flagship commander of the Western Naval Command. Admiral Kumar was born on 12 April 1962 and was appointed to the Administration of the Indian Navy on 1 January 1983.

The Admiral has held a number of commands, staff, and instructional positions during the course of his almost 39-year career in the Navy. The INS Nishank, the INS Kora missile corvette and the guided missile destroyer INS Ranvir are all part of the Admiral Kumar Naval Command. He also commanded the INS Viraat, the Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier. The Admiral also served as the Western Fleet’s Fleet Operations Officer.

He was the Chief of the Integrated Staff Committee of Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff, before becoming FOC-in-C Western Naval Command. Admiral Kumar attended the Naval Warfare College of the United States, the Army War College of Moe and the Royal College of Defense Research in England. The Param Vishist Seva Medal (PVSM), the Ati Vishist Seva Medal (AVSM), and the Vishist Seva Medal have all been bestowed to him (VSM).
