Pune Based Start-up Lokal Raises Over 15 million $, Founders in Forbes 30 under 30

If you have access to the internet, you are likely aware of the most recent world news. But, do you have the most up-to-date information about immunisation schedules in your area, the pricing of veggies at the local market, or whether or not there will be a power outage near you? This type of information may be found in Lokal App, one of India’s fastest-growing applications. Lokal, a hyperlocal social media network that launched in 2018 and has since expanded to five states, has now launched in Maharashtra, with the goal of attracting 10 million members from 36 districts by the end of 2022. It recently raised $15 million, and the founders, Jani Pasha and Vipul Chaudhary, were included to Forbes‘ Asia 2020 list of 30 Under 30.

What is going on in the neighbourhood is quite significant to them. Lokal is primarily concerned with community news, job postings, matrimony, real estate, and classified ads. We’ve gone incredibly deep, which means local companies are adopting our platform and using it to promote to their consumers and generate more sales, according to Jani Pasha. Its income has surged tenfold year over year and is increasing at a rate of 30% month over month. One of their primary qualities, according to Pasha, is facilitating self-expression.

The product is aimed at tier 2 and tier 3 cities with a non-English-speaking clientele, and it attempts to fulfil the role of local media in facilitating local discoveries. Because Marathi is one of India’s most widely spoken languages, we anticipate Maharashtra contributing 25% of income in the coming quarter,” adds Pasha.

According to research conducted by the Internet and Mobile Association of India and Nielsen, India has over half a billion active internet users, and businesses like Lokal are taking advantage of this large user base. “We’re talking about the 500 million people who are new to the internet as a result of Jio and for whom English isn’t their first language. They use the internet to consume material or to communicate with their peers via WhatsApp.

Even in Pune, internet users who converse in their native tongue and are not fluent in English may find the internet to be ineffective. The Lokal App is a platform that uses location as a key component to address the problem of finding out about employment, holiday discounts, prayer times, and donation drives. Lokal’s user population has increased as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak, with individuals logging in to check caseloads and store timings, especially during lockdowns. While the platform moderates the material to screen out fake news, it is created by community users and stringers who work for local newspapers. After Maharashtra, Lokal will travel across India and then to Southeast Asia, stopping in Gujarat and West Bengal.
