Poisoned young minds targeted Muslim women to spread hate

By Atul Chandra

A woman and three men in their early twenties have been arrested in connection with the misogynist Bulli Bai app which was recently uploaded on the GitHub open source platform. The platform had earlier allowed itself to be used by another controversial app called the Sulli Deals.

Both the apps uploaded doctored photos of over 100 Muslim women with derogatory and objectionable details for auction. The Sulli Deals appeared on GitHub in July last year but was shut after an outcry and after a police investigation was launched. The ‘Sulli Deals’ shocked netizens as the app had the tagline of “Sulli deal of the day” along with morphed photographs of Muslim women. Sulli is a derogatory term for women and the site claimed that people could bid for Muslim women whose photos had been uploaded. The disgusting purpose was to cause hurt and social and mental trauma to the minority community women who were soft targets for the malicious campaign.

After Bulli Bai appeared there was a furore. It targeted Muslim women with the intention of insulting them and propagating communalism. Following strong condemnation, the police in Mumbai and Delhi launched an investigation and arrested four persons, including the mastermind Niraj Bishnoi, from different parts of the country. Others who have been arrested include Shweta Singh (18), Vishal Kumar Jha and Mayank Agarwal. All four are students. A second-year B.Tech student in Bhopal, Bishnoi, is suspected to be the main conspirator and creator of the Bulli Bai app. Vishal is also an engineering student. Shweta Singh was arrested from Rudrapur in Uttarakhand. She belongs to a poor family and was apparently doing it for money. Both her parents are dead.

Asking the IT Minister to take “stern action against such rampant misogyny and communal targeting of women through #sullideals like platforms”, Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said it was “a shame that it continues to be ignored”.

The targeting of Muslim women and Dharm Sansad’s call for ethnic cleansing are ominous signs for the secular fabric of the country. With the arrest of the four accused in the Bulli Bai app, the police claim to have solved the case but the damage the criminal-minded youth has caused to the mostly young Muslim women is irreparable. Bishnoi, shockingly, is said to have told the police that he has no regrets for what he did.

The Sulli Deals and Bulli Bai apps show the extent to which the BJP, VHP and Bajrang Dal have succeeded in poisoning the minds of youth in the name of religion. That the apps have created a sense of extreme insecurity in Muslim women in India is no surprise.
