LONDON: Novak Djokovic defeated Italy’s Matteo Berrettini 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in the Wimbledon final to win the Wimbledon title for the sixth time. With this win, he has become joint number one in winning the most Grand Slam titles among men. Now like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, he has 20 Grand Slam titles to his name. Djokovic had also won the French Open earlier. Number one male tennis player Djokovic also moved closer to the calendar Grand Slam with this win. If he wins the US Open, he will be the first player since 1969 to win all four Grand Slams in the same year.
Berrettini made a lot of mistakes in the beginning, taking advantage of which Djokovic broke his serve early. After this, when Djokovic was ahead 5-2, Berrettini saved the set point. The Italian player saved his serve in the next game amid the support of the spectators and then took the break point and extended the match towards the tiebreaker. Berrettini took a 3-0 lead early in the tiebreaker. Djokovic, playing in his 30th Grand Slam final, leveled but Berrettini soon got two set points. He made this set on the first set point by collecting ace which lasted for one hour and 10 minutes.
Djokovic gave Berrettini a chance to come back in the second set as well. The Serbian once held a 4-0 lead but failed to win the set at 5-2 on his serve. Djokovic lost three set points at 5-3 but easily scored a serve on his serve in the next game to level the match at 1-1.
In the third game of the third set, Djokovic broke Berrettini’s service to lead 2–1 and then kept his serve. He saved two break points in the sixth game. He took the lead in the match at the second set point after Berrettini’s forehand was out. The top-seeded Serbian took advantage of Berrettini’s double fault in the fourth set to lead 4-3 before securing a break point in the final game.
Now Novak Djokovic will have a golden chance to win the record for most Grand Slam wins in men. He can do this wonders through the US Open.
