Kathmandu: Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli recommended the dissolution of Parliament during an emergency Cabinet meeting that was held early Sunday morning.
“Today’s Cabinet meeting decided to recommend the President to dissolve the Parliament,” the Kathmandu post quoted Energy Minister Barshaman Pun as saying.
According to reports, the recommendation will now be forwarded to the President Bidya Devi Bhandari for the approval and effect.
An ordinance related to the Constitutional Council has been the bone of contention between PM Oli and senior leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
A new provision was introduced through an ordinance on Tuesday which stated that the meeting of the constitutional council does not require the presence of the Speaker and the leader of the Opposition party, as a simple majority is sufficient quorum.
Mr Dahal wanted the ordinance to be withdrawn, while Mr Oli has been reluctant to do so. The Prime Minister’s reluctance had already stoked speculations in the Dahal camp weather Mr Oli is planning for a drastic step.
Notably, on Saturday, PM Oli paid a visit to Dahal to defuse the crisis, but, after today’s move it seems that the meeting was unable to reap any benefits.
