New Delhi: The government on Friday called a report by US-based NGO Freedom House, which downrated India’s status to partially free from free, as “misleading, incorrect and misplaced”.
The government has said that apart from the ruling party at the national level, there are governments of other parties in many states. Elections are conducted in the country in an independent and impartial manner by an independent Election Commission. The central government treats all citizens equally. The government has issued a point-wise rebuttal on the report. The statement said that India has a progressive democracy, in which there is complete space for those who hold different views.
The annual report says that the world’s largest democracy is moving towards totalitarianism. He has referred to mob violence against Muslims in Delhi riots. The sedition law is also mentioned against critics and the crisis of migrant laborers has been cited after the lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to control the corona virus epidemic.
The Center said that the Government of India treats all citizens equally, as mentioned in the Constitution and all laws apply to all without discrimination. In law and order, the entire legal process is followed, irrespective of the identity of the alleged instigator.
