Mercury can go up to 47 degrees in North India, IMD issues red alert

With the temperature above 45 degrees Celsius in many parts of North India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a ‘Red Alert’ for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Rajasthan for the next two days. . Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the meteorological department’s regional meteorological center, said that the department has also issued an Orange warning regarding heat wave for eastern Uttar Pradesh. He cautioned that temperatures could reach 47 degrees Celsius in some parts in the next two-three days.

Srivastava said that this is the first time in this summer season when a red alert has been issued regarding heatwave. In this season, the temperature did not rise as it usually does in northern and central India and it was due to heavy rains in April which continued till mid-May. Pilani in Rajasthan recorded a temperature of 46.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
