Indian President Ram Nath Kovind shared his sadness over the stampede incident that occurred at Mata Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir’s Katra. It was at 2.45 am when a stampede took place at the Vaishno Devi shrine. More than a dozen people were killed and 20 others were injured early on Saturday due to the stampede. As per Union Minister Nityanand Rai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keeping a check on the situation.

Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Dilbag Singh shared with a news agency ANI that the stampede was caused due to an argument that broke out and resulted in people pushing each other. The incident happened near gate number three outside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple atop Trikuta hills. Many devotees had come together at the temple for darshan on the first day of New Year 2022. The toll may become higher as the way through the hilltop shrine was loaded with devotees.

The Mata Vaishno Devi is one of the most esteemed Hindu shrines in India, with tens of thousands going to the temple to offer prayers every day. As per the government officials, a high-level probe has been ordered to get into the details of the stampede incident. Also, an ex-gratia of Rs. 10 lakhs has been ordered for the family of those killed in the incident and Rs. 2 lakh for the kin of the injured. The central government has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh for the families of the dead and Rs. 50,000 for those whose family members have been injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter, “Extremely saddened by the loss of lives. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon”. On Saturday, many other leaders such as Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbagh Singh, Haryana Chief Minister Lal Khattar, former Punjab counterpart Amarinder Singh shared their condolences for the loss of lives in the Jammu and Kashmir stampede.
