New Delhi: At least 53 people have been killed by armed cattle thieves in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Jamfara. The gunmen were on motorcycles and attacked farmers from at least six different villages in Jurmi district, Jamfara police spokesman Mohammad Shehu was quoted as saying by The Kuwait Times newspaper on Saturday.
He said the farmers who tried to escape the attack were chased and killed.
Mr Shehu said these attacks were carried out on Thursday and Friday. At least 14 bodies were taken to the capital Gusau on Friday. Meanwhile, local residents told the Kuwait Times that they had recovered 39 more bodies and buried them in the city during the period.
Residents of Jurmi district blocked a major highway last week to draw the attention of local authorities to the problem of ongoing armed attacks, kidnappings and raids on villages.
