NewDelhi: The Union Health Ministry has allowed foreign nationals residing in India to register on the CoWin portal for receiving Covid-19 prevention jabs. The decision was made public by the ministry, on 9 August 2021. Such individuals can use their passports as identity documents to register on the portal, the ministry said.
A large number of foreign nationals live in India, especially in metropolitan areas. The possibility of the spread of Covid-19 is high in these areasdue to higher population density. To counter any such occurrence, it is important to vaccinate all eligible persons, the official notification read.
In the meantime, India reported 35,499 fresh Covid-19 cases on 9 August 2021, with as many as 447 deaths in the last 24 hours, as of 8 am, as per Health Ministry data. The cases are lower than the 39,070 contractions reported previously. Till now the India recorded 3,19,69,954 infections, of which, the total active load was 4,02,188 while the death toll was 4,28,309. While, in the last 24 hours about 39,686 cases recovered, aggregating to total recoveries of 3,11,39,457.

Meanwhile, the states Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh reported a spike in active cases, with Kerala registering the highest number of positive cases, followed by Maharashtra.
Overall, the weekly positivity rate has managed to stay below the 5 per cent mark, presently at 2.35 per cent, and the daily positivity rate stands at 2.59 per cent, less than the 3 per cent reported over the last 14 days.
Also, as many as 13,71,871 Covid-19 tests were conducted in India as on 8 August 2021, with a total 48.17 crore tests done and more than 51 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered to eligible citizens across the nation.
