New Delhi: Farmers’ movement has been going on for the last about four months, demanding the withdrawal of agricultural laws of the Center. Farmers have been protesting by sitting on a dharna near the borders of Delhi and demonstrating continuously. At the same time, the Bharatiya Kisan Union said that the peasant movement will last for another eight months. Farmers will harvest their wheat crop by 10 May, after which the movement will pick up speed.
Rakesh Tikait, spokesperson of BKU, said on Thursday that the agitation of farmers will have to run for eight more months. He said that the farmer will have to agitate otherwise the land of the farmers will be lost. After May 10, the movement will pick up speed.
The protesting farmers said that they will jam the Kundli-Manesar-Palwar Expressway on April 10. They are also planning to undertake a parliamentary march on foot in May. Farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chadhuni said, “A meeting of the Kisan United Front has been held on Tuesday in which it was decided that they will march till the dead in May. The date has not been set yet.”
Several rounds of talks have been held between the representatives of the protesting farmers’ organizations and the central government so far, but nothing has been achieved. In the month of September last year, three new agricultural laws were passed by Parliament amidst heavy opposition from the opposition. Demonstrations are going on against the farmers. The farmers demand that the central government make the MSP a part of the law with the withdrawal of all three new agricultural laws. The government argues that through these three new laws, the agriculture sector will be improved, the condition of the farmers will improve and their income will increase. Farmers fear that under the pretext of these new agricultural laws, the central government will leave them at the mercy of industrialists and end the MSP system.
