New Delhi: Farmers across the country have been demonstrating in Delhi for nearly a month against the new agricultural laws. Many farmers’ organizations have gathered in the capital to protest against the Center. Now senior economists of Delhi have written an open letter to Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar regarding this law. In this letter, economists after farmers have spoken of withdrawing all three laws. He says that these laws are not in the interest of small and marginal farmers.
These include D. Narasimha Reddy associated with the National Institute of Rural Development. Through the letter, he has told the government that changes in agricultural marketing system were necessary but this new law of the Center does not fulfill any need.
In this paper, economists have said that the central government has ignored the role of the state by making laws. After these laws, the role of state governments in the interest of farmers will be negligible and small farmers will have to suffer. He has further stated that the mandis were more appropriate under the leadership of the state, while big businesses get a place in the markets within the center. This will cause small losses to small farmers. The state governments could buy the farmers’ produce well, while the central government on a large scale would not be able to do this work properly.
