New Delhi: The Delhi Police’s Vigilance Investigation Report regarding the riots in the capital Delhi last year has been described as a waste paper by the Delhi High Court. The court on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over the Delhi Police’s vigilance investigation report, which was made on the charge of leaking the confessional statement of a student of Jamia Millia Islamia to the media.
The High Court has ordered the Special Commissioner (Vigilance) of Delhi Police to appear before the court on March 5 and give clarification. Justice Mukta Gupta has said that this vigilance investigation is worse than a normal investigation of a case of theft.
Jamia’s student Asif Iqbal Tanha, who was jailed under UAPA sections in the Delhi riots, had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court last year for a media trial. Iqbal had said in his plea that the police had leaked his confession in the media, while the confession made before the police was not valid in the court after which several news channels and news websites mishandled the report.
Looking at the report, a bench headed by Justice Mukta Gupta said, “It is worse than the report presented in the general inquiry.” Questioning the inquiry, the court said, “You are a senior officer.” Who did you investigate, who did you interrogate. Where did you send the files Who brought him back from Delhi Government and Ministry of Home Affairs.? The court said that these are not documents lying on the road. There is nothing in this report.
