Congress Workers to Skip Uttar Pradesh Deputy Speaker Election

On Monday, Congress said it would boycott the election for deputy speaker, accusing the ruling BJP of deflecting attention away from the state’s numerous issues. Workers from Congress sat in front of the state legislature with placards seeking justice for the farmers killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri riots on October 3. The party also said that both the BJP and the SP were engaged in a tight battle and were more concerned with the election than resolving the state’s numerous burning concerns.

He said that the position of deputy speaker, which took place just months before the assembly elections, was intended solely to deceive the public and distract attention away from the Lakhimpur Kheri tragedy. He said that Congress would continue to struggle till Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra is fired and that they are currently on a dharna over the problems. The election for deputy speaker will take place later in the day.

On Sunday, an enraged Samajwadi Party, which has filed Narendra Verma as its official candidate for the election, attacked the BJP, accusing it of destroying democracy and asserting that the opposition party should historically hold the seat. After a 14-year wait, Uttar Pradesh will have its first Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly after Monday’s election. The BJP gained 304 seats in the 403-member UP Legislative Assembly in the 2017 assembly elections, and its majority in the House will secure Agarwal’s win.

Lallu, who blamed the state administration for the violence in Lakhimpur, said the farmers had yet to receive justice. “The minister hasn’t been fired yet. The father maintains his position despite the imprisonment of his son. Is this the type of justice we’re talking about? Will the person in charge of the investigation salute the minister or oversee a fair investigation?” Lallu wondered.

Farmers believe that Ashish Mishra, the son of Union Minister of State for Home, was in one of the vehicles, which he and the minister deny, claiming that they can present proof to indicate he was at an event at the time. On October 9, Ashish Mishra was detained in connection with the case.

The Congress leader also said that the government has made no comment on the three new agro laws and that there is no need for a discussion on the cane, paddy prices, or the stray cattle problem, which has become a threat to farmers. Both the BJP and the Samajwadi Party, on the other hand, are looking forward to the election of the deputy speaker and have submitted candidacy papers, he added. He said that the country’s farmers and jawans are “unhappy” today but that the government has no time for them and that the SP does not want to address these concerns.
