New Delhi: This act was approved by the President today in the midst of a fierce battle between the Kejriwal government and the Center over the NCT bill. With this, it has become law now. The Union Home Ministry will now announce that when this law will come into force.
The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday amidst the walkout of the Congress and other opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party. The bill is being seen as a major setback for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s government. Since the time of Aam Aadmi Party coming to power for the first time in 2013, the conflict with the Lieutenant Governor has come up many times.
The Delhi National Capital Territory Governance (Amendment) Bill makes it clear that “Government” in Delhi means the Lieutenant Governor and the Delhi Government will have to take their opinion before taking any executive decision.
The bill was passed in Parliament after two days of uproar in the Rajya Sabha. During this time, opposition MPs alleged that it would destroy democracy. The opposition demanded that the bill be sent to the Select Committee.
The bill was passed by voice vote in Rajya Sabha. When the government put this bill in the House for consideration, the opposition demanded a division of votes. During voting, 83 members were in favor of the bill while 45 members were against the bill.
