BJP Starts Community Meeting Eyeing on Caste Votes

The ruling BJP held the first of a series of ‘Samajik Pratinidhi Sammelans,’ or meetings for representatives of society, on Sunday, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressing a gathering of the “Prajapati samaj,” an OBC segment associated with the state’s community of potters, with an eye on the state’s caste equations ahead of the assembly elections in a few months. The BJP intends to host 27 similar conventions across the state till October 31, according to party leaders. These sammelans occur when the opposition SP is holding yatras to engage with communities, while the BSP is holding conventions focused on the Brahmin community.

Adityanath spoke about his government’s attempts to help potters get economic empowerment at a BJP gathering on Sunday. The Chief Minister declared that 9 lakh diyas would be used in Ayodhya for Diwali, with his administration purchasing them from local potters. “Earlier, idols were being produced in China,” Adityanath remarked, pointing out that the Mati Kala Board was established to assist potters. China is an atheist country, yet it began producing Lakshmi-Ganesh statues to sell at exorbitant rates. People in our Prajapati society used to sit around doing nothing. We are no longer importing idols from China; instead, we are creating them ourselves.”

Party representatives from various backward classes spoke at the BJP event, including state president Swatantradev Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, and vice-chairman of the National Commission for Backward Classes Lokesh Kumar Prajapati. When contacted, BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha state president Ramchandra Kanaujiya stated that sammelans for seven SC groups, Pasi, Kanaujiya, Valmiki, Kori, Katheria, Sonkar, and Jatav, will be conducted from October 19.

Rakesh Tripathi, a BJP state spokesperson, said the party “takes all sectors and classes along.” “Through the samajik pratinidhi sammelans, which began today, the party will honour famous and significant people from all sectors and classes. The party would also conduct discussions with them about state government choices affecting their wellbeing. Similar programmes, according to Tripathi, were held in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The emphasis would be on conducting sammelans for OBCs and SCs, according to party insiders, because “they jointly form a majority of votes in UP, and regional parties have relevance solely because of them.” Last month, seven new ministers were appointed into the State Cabinet, including one Brahmin, three OBCs, two SCs, and one ST; one of them, Dharamveer Prajapati, attended the sammelan on Sunday. Three OBCs, three SCs, and one Brahmin from Uttar Pradesh were inducted into the Union Cabinet in July.

With elections approaching, Adityanath used his address to criticise the previous SP administration, accusing it of providing “shelter to rioters” and “driving the state into darkness during festivals.” Curfews were formerly imposed during festivals, when local craftspeople earned their living, according to Adityanath. “Curfew, rioting because riots were a part of the former government’s character.” They protected and supported rioters in every manner possible. The majority group was hounded and falsely accused as a result of the riots,” Adityanath stated.

As a result, idols were not sold, and diyas were destroyed, according to the Chief Minister. According to Adityanath, there hasn’t been a single riot in Uttar Pradesh in the last four and a half years. In fact, during the anti-CAA movement two years ago, UP saw huge protests and violence.

On Sunday, the Chief Minister further stated that there were no communal disturbances in the state during Navratri and Vijayadashami when new idols were installed at 41,000 sites and over 32,000 submerged until Saturday evening. Despite the coal problem, he said, the Uttar Pradesh government was purchasing power at a rate of Rs 22 per unit, compared to Rs 7 in a normal circumstance, and providing it throughout the state “to avoid darkness during festivals.”
