How has TV transformed from an idiot box to smart TV?

It was in the late 1980s when my dad purchased the first TV in our house run by my parents of middle-class income. I was not even born then but my mom used to say that in the 1990s when I was born, I would smile as a baby whenever some songs used to be played in the Chitrahaar serial that had song clips of Bollywood movies.

It was in the 1990s when the first serial I started seeing as a child was Hum Paanch by Ekta Kapoor‘s production house. My cousins used to come to my home during the weekends and we used to discuss which serial is good to watch for timepass after doing our homework. It was then I started getting the habit of watching TV serials mostly produced by Ekta Kapoor such as Kkusum, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahiin Toh Hoga, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, and then when I was going to college, I liked to watch Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Dill Mill Gayye, Miley Jab Hum Tum, Geet… Huyi Sabse Parayi, along with various other saas-bahu dramas that were aired on the top channels like Star Plus, Zee TV, and Sony TV back then.

It was when I started going to the office I was shocked at some real-life serials like Bigg Boss, Balika Vadhu, Sasural Simar Ka, and realized that I had enough of negative dramas running in my mind all thanks to the daily dosage of serials that were taught through the Idiot Box, yes TV was really called an idiot box until it transformed itself to Smart TV.

It was when my brother got a Smart TV at his home wherein he showed how serials can be saved, some scenes can be skipped and good content can be explored on the streaming platforms like Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5, Netflix, Amazon Prime, among others. As he had a kid at home, he would ensure that my nephew would only watch good content, mythological serials that inspires him to do good work and discover something new at Discovery channel reality shows and not get addicted to saas-bahu soaps, negative dramas created only for the TRPs and non-sensical shows that are nowhere near to reality.

Indeed I agree from my experience that television has transformed from the 1980s as an Idiot box to Smart TV in the 2010s/20s to provide wisdom and knowledge. Now we have control of what to watch and what to skip. The choice to remain an idiot or become smart has been given to us, thanks to technological transformation and advancement.
