Deepa Mehta’s ‘Funny Boy’ to represent Canada for Oscars

Renowned director Deepa Mehta’s upcoming feature movie “Funny Boy” has been chosen as Canada’s submission best international film at the 93rd Academy Awards.

The film will be the second time that the director is competing in the category.

Earlier, Deepa’s feature film Water was nominated for the Oscars in the international feature film category in 2007.

The feature Funny Boy is based on Shyam Selvadurai’s 1994 novel of the same name.

The story is set during 1970s and 1980s in Sri Lanka and narrates the life of a young boy Arjie who realizes his sexual awakening once he turns into a teenager.

The role of Arjie is performed by Arush Nand and Brandon Ingram.

Christa Dickenson, executive director of Telefilm Canada believes that Deepa’s Funny Boy film will also impress the members of the Academy Awards just like her powerful movie Water did in 2007.

The film that has been co-written by Mehta and Selvadurai will be released in theatres in some cities and also stream on Netflix on 10 December 2020.
