The logic of the supplement is an essential phase of Of Grammatology. A supplement is said to be used secondarily and as assistance to things that are original or natural. Writing is an example of this type of arrangement. Supplementarity is an essential unlimited process. Writing is the supplement as it shows itself as a symbol for a sign, placing itself in the form of a speech that is already meaningful.
One example of the supplement can be said to be masturbation or even the usage of birth control precautions. What is important about both these examples is the vagueness that makes sure that what is supplementary can be always explained in two ways. For example, our society’s use of birth control precautions like condoms, contraceptive pills can be described as proposing and replacing a shortcoming in nature. On the other side, it can be debated that such precautions simply add on to or enhance our natural ways. We can say that the supplement adding itself is always vague or that cannot be decided if the supplement supplements adding merely to replace something.
We can describe the logic of supplementarity with the following example. Y is added to Z. Y substitutes for Z. Y makes up for the absence of Z. Y makes up for Z’s lack. Y destroys the purity of Z. Y is that through which Z is lost. Y is a danger to Z. Y is a remedy to Z. Y can never satisfy the desire for Z.
