What is a self-imposed lockdown?

Today we will understand this new concept that has got its origin due to the coronavirus outbreak in December 2019 all over the world. With regards to the example, we will be specific and give a case story of a person who is in a self-imposed lockdown to encourage others also to follow such a lifestyle in these crisis times.

Self-imposed lockdown means a person or individual decides to stay at home and carry on with his regular activities of office-work / studies from the home itself along with actively participating in the household activities. The person doesn’t go out of the house unnecessarily and finds out a way to avoid traveling out and get all the essential needs met at home itself. Read the case story below to understand the concept better.

Pushpa is a 68 years old woman who lives in a 1BHK alone at a home in Mumbai. Being a middle-class woman, she keeps an account of all the purchases and expenses since the last many years. She has a son who lives in Bangalore with his family. When the coronavirus outbreak started in March 2020 all over India, Pushpa was very worried about how she will manage to get the essential needs if she doesn’t step out. Pushpa’s relative encouraged her to go for online shopping and shared with her the numbers of milkmen, grocery shop owners, medical shop owners, and others who do home-delivery of items for a charge. Pushpa decided to stay indoors only but stay physically and mentally active so that she would also stay fit and fine even in lockdown.

Pushpa dialed up the contact numbers and ordered stuff for herself once in 15 days or 1 month as and as the stock of her essential items got over. Whenever the delivery boys came to deliver her the items, Pushpa ensured to stock them in a bucket and she wiped the floors and door handles with a disinfectant as soon as they went. Pushpa’s relatives and friends kept nagging her of why she is staying at home only when the lockdown restrictions got relaxed, but Pushpa was firm that she has decided to battle with the virus and stay safe indoors.

It is Pushpa’s commitment towards her health that she kept herself engaged with television serials, WhatsApp groups, prayers, and doing all the household work every day to keep herself fit and that she has been able to stay away from the virus independently. Pushpa doesn’t believe this is the second wave or third wave but has decided that she will step out only when the virus gets eradicated from all over the country. Her belief is that one should think positively and hope that this difficult phase will go away in its natural course of time.
