What is a Career Break?

A career break is the period of time when a person is not working in his profession due to job layoffs or planning to transform his career or retire from his job earlier than usual.

Career breaks are needed in today’s ever-changing world. Gone are those days when people used to stick to a particular job from the age of 20 to 60 and put in their best services to a specific company for their whole life.

In those days, jobs weren’t dynamic and there was less scope for job or work opportunities in India. However, now as the times have changed, we can witness at least 10% of the employees in every organization keep switching to different companies in two-five years for better pay structure and better amenities in terms of work-life balance and also professional growth.

It isn’t wrong to say that career breaks are even taken purposefully by many professionals in order to upskill their careers or due to personal reasons like health issues, family problems, location issues, and others. Thus, career breaks need to be managed very well in order to not breakdown and waste the off-time from work by not doing anything meaningful or productive.

One can make a plan of what they can do during their career breaks like learning a new course or completing their personal work or doing something interesting or pursuing their hobbies. Whatever it is, one has to be extremely positive during the break from their profession as it is a roller-coaster ride of emotions and thoughts. If a person who works from Monday to Saturday in a good MNC in a reputed post and suddenly he sits at home thinking that he cannot tolerate the stress levels of the job, he needs to be calm and composed to deal with the losses that will incur when he is away from work – financial losses and even emotional strength to deal with people in the society who will question or bother him unnecessarily for staying at home and not going to work.
