What are Principles of News Writing?

News stories are written by making use of 5Ws and 1H in the first paragraph of the story. This is the first and most essential and oldest way of writing a news story. The first paragraph of the news story is known as the Intro or Lead of the story which must definitely have the answers to five Ws and one H, which are Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. This is the most known principle of developing and writing a news story which has been accepted globally and even practiced.

The first paragraph of the news story must clearly mention who is the main character, object, subject, the concern of the event needs to be talked about or discussed in the story. Is it the Prime Minister or the lead actor of a film or a recognized celebrity? The remaining four Ws and one H include what happened to the who, when did it happen, where it happened, why did it happened and how did it happen?

Based on the event’s nature, the reporter or writer will have to decide which of the Ws are quite prominent and vital to the story. For example, if the topic is about Narendra Modi or Salman Khan, it is obvious that more readers would want to read and thus, the story cannot be short and have detailed information about the Ws and H.

Also, the time when the event happened is also quite important as any event that leaves a huge influence on a majority of the population will also gather a lot of eyeballs. For example, if a rail accident has taken place at midnight then the writer has to mention the exact timing and the number of deaths or people affected as of the date and time while publishing the news.
