Tips to support teen children in their career choices

Teen children are quite grown-ups and matured enough to know what they want in life. However, there are some teen children who go through confusion and struggles in making a career choice due to various reasons. Some still have personality issues that make them doubt and afraid of whatever they do in life. As a parent of a teen child, it becomes your responsibility to guide your teen child in making the right career choices. Remember guidance is different from commanding and forcing anyone to follow your rules and thought patterns. You need to keep the balance between a parent and a friend to a teen child as you cannot influence them negatively as per your wishes even if what you think is very much appropriate for them.

1) Firstly encourage your teen child to be open with you about their likes and dislikes in terms of hobbies and subjects in school or college. Tell them that being frank won’t tarnish their image from your side and you are willing to accept whatever they speak or think. There has to be no fear-based relationship between you and your child and this needs to be broken for healthy long-term relationships.

2) Secondly you need to ask your child if he is comfortable with his hobbies and favorite subjects as a career choice. Like you need to have a open discussion of the possibilities of how your child can take any or all of his hobbies or subjects as a full-time job. For example, if your child likes to create toys or models through clay or artforms, you need to ask if your child would be willing to do this if given as a day job in the long run. You may not get an answer immediately and that too confidently but it will help your child to think about him and his future. It would create a discussion inside him of what he wants in life truly.

3) Approach a career counselor who can help you do this guidance on an official level with the proper methodology of making your child go through aptitude tests and knowing his or her interests and helping your child learn of what is there in the world to make him earn a living in the long run and how he can take the steps from the start.
