Education Desk – On 25 October, IIT Madras will launch India’s first global campus in Zanzibar-Tanzania, East Africa. It is also the first-ever campus headed by a woman director. The campus offers a BS degree in data science and AI and an M Tech degree. The director of the campus is the dean of the School of Science and Engineering (IIT Madras) Prof Preeti Aghalayam.
Applications are open with 50 seats for the BS course and 20 seats for the M Tech course.
Prof Preeti. said that the IIT-M Zanzibar campus will have a structure with degree programs hosted by schools. The detailed evolution plan for academic programs is under development.
On Monday, IIT Madras director Prof V Kamakoti said that it will be in the history of IIT Madras. He also said why he has choose Zanzibar, he said the place has a good school education setup and we will get potential students who can be an asset to India.
In addition, The Zanzibar campus offers data science and AI courses but in the future, it will add courses like Electronic Systems and another course in marine engineering as well.
A screening test and an interview will be conducted for entry to the Zanzibar campus.
