15 September is observed as Engineer’s Day. On this occasion, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his Twitter handle to share how India is blessed to have skilled and talented engineers who are contributing to the development of the nation. Engineer’s Day is celebrated to honor the birth anniversary of engineer statesman Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a diwan of the erstwhile Mysore kingdom, who is known for his pioneering engineering projects. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was an engineer who had earlier in 1934 planned for the Indian Economy. He was given an Honorary Membership of the London Institution of Civil Engineers for an intact 50 years. Moreover, he was conferred with India’s biggest honor, which is the Bharat Ratna in 1955.
Narendra Modi tweeted, “Greetings to all engineers on Engineers Day. Our nation is blessed to have a skilled and talented pool of engineers who are contributing to nation-building. Our Government is working to enhance the infrastructure for studying engineering including building more engineering colleges.”
“On Engineers Day, we remember the pathbreaking contribution of Sir M Visvesvaraya. May he keep inspiring generations of future engineers to distinguish themselves,” he said.

A lot has been spoken about and debated about the growing attraction towards the profession of engineers. In India, we have many engineers who have done amazing jobs but the country fails to give a job to every engineer thus, making Indian parents about their children’s future when they don’t get jobs with good packages. Also, in India, the cost of studying engineering is too high compared to other common professions like commerce, arts, etc. Thus, engineering is done by only those who can afford to complete the 4 or 5 years of degree along with the patience and intelligence to deal with the technicalities of the subjects.
Here are some interesting quotes on Engineering by famous people in the world.
“Science is discovering the essential truths about what exists in the Universe, engineering is about creating things that never existed.” [Elon Musk].
Meaning- Science is definite as people who study science get to know the realities of what is already available or exists in the Universe. But engineering is a special field through which students study how they can create things out of the already available things. So, engineering in a way involves technical training to use creativity.
“Software is a great combination of artistry and engineering.” [Bill Gates].
Meaning – Software is a mix of artistic ideas combined with engineering procedures. So, whenever you download an app or check through a website, it is a combination of the brains that come with engineering and artistic backgrounds. Because when these two combine that’s when solutions to the existing challenges come up.
People also make fun of engineers on the internet because they are said to make anything out of nothing. Engineering as a profession and the way the education system sells the course and makes students go through rigorous processes during their studies is also made fun of in the famous movie 3 Idiots. You can check out how engineers if they don’t use common sense and basic knowledge of humanity end up creating nuisance in society in several movies made in the film industry.
