From Class 6 Failure to UPSC 2011 AIR 2: Rukmini Riar’s Inspiring Journey

UPSC is one of the most difficult exams in India. But if you determine you can crack the exams with flying colors. And Rukmini Riar prove this, she failed in class 6th but still aced the 2011 UPSC civil services exam without any help. That’s inspiring, isn’t it?

Rukmani Riar was an average student. When she failed in 6th grade, she shifted to Sacred Heart School in Dalhousie. Here she completed her schooling. She did her graduation from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar in social sciences. Then she did a master’s in social sciences at Mumbai’s Tata Institute of Social Sciences and won a gold medal.

After this Rukmani started working as an intern with NGOs in Mumbai. Here her life takes a U-turn, while working she decided to appear for the UPSC exam. She diverted herself to the UPSC and started preparing.

She was determined to crack the exam anyhow and she cracked the exam on her first attempt. The inspiring part is she did not go for any coaching to prepare for the UPSC. She does everything on her own and In 2011, she got an AIR 2 and became an IAS officer.

In an interview, she shared tips to prepare for the UPSC. She said she relied on NCERT books from Classes 6 to 12 and used to read magazines and newspapers. Along with this, she appeared for several mock tests and solved previous year’s question papers.
