Mass communication is the way of exchanging and providing information through mass media to larger parts of society. Mass media is usually considered as utilization of different types of media because the technologies convey the information from a person or group of people to others in the most official manner. Journalism and advertising are part of mass communication. Mass communication cannot be called interpersonal communication or organizational communication.
Mass communication studies mainly focus on the content or information of mass communication which affects the attitude, opinion, emotion, behavior of the people who receive the information. Transmission of a message or messages to a large section of the society at one go can be termed as mass communication. Mass communication can be analyzed as the process that circulates information within regions or areas and across the world extensively.
Mass communication includes the use of conveying information through radio, television, social media, billboards, newspapers, magazines, books, films, documentaries, and the Internet. In today’s times, mass communication is used to spread information at a faster rate mostly about a health crisis, controversial topics, politics, and other trending topics.
An example of mass communication is about information that got circulated during the COVID-19 times about the pressing issues of the increasing coronavirus cases and deaths caused due to it. When the coronavirus disease outbreak happened in January 2019 in China, many media outlets covered what the disease is all about and how it affects people of different age groups. Soon many countries started facing the issue with almost 50,000 people infected with the virus in the world within two to three months. When the virus was detected in India, many media organizations started writing about how to prevent getting the virus, announcements were made on radio, television, and social media like WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter with prevention and precautionary messages for the common public to not get infected with the virus and how to manage the symptoms if the virus has struck.
