Human Right Day 2020!!
Human Rights Day is celebrated on 10 December every year; the United Nations General Assembly adopted it in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR publicly announces the absolute rights that all human beings are entitled to irrespective of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinions, national or social origin, property, birth, or status.
It is celebrated to reaffirm the importance of human rights in re-building the world we want.
Human Right Day 2020 theme:
This year the theme is “Recover Better – Stand Up for Human Rights.” This theme is directly linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the focus is to build a back better and recover fast.
According to UN.org, “We will reach our common global goals only if we are able to create equal opportunities for all, address the failures exposed and exploited by Covid-19, and apply human rights standards to tackle entrenched, systematic, and intergenerational inequalities, exclusion and discrimination”.
Importance of Human Right Day 2020:
Human Rights Day is vital every year. This year makes it more essential as the Covid-19 crisis has been fuelled by deepening poverty, rising inequalities, structural and entrenched discrimination, and other gaps in human rights protection.
A statement on the UN website on Human Rights Day reads, “Human rights are at the heart of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as in the absence of human dignity we cannot hope to drive sustainable development. Human Rights are driven by progress on all SDGs, and the SDGs are driven by advancements on human rights.”
