Goal setting is a plan of action that helps a person to come up with an aim or objective to achieve. The goal can be set for any sphere in life. Goals are set so that a person is encouraged to work towards their path and feel a sense of achievement after accomplishing the goal. A goal is not just wishes or desires but a thoughtful intention. Thus, setting goals involves a person’s commitment, feelings, emotions, behavior, actions towards achieving the same.
Goal setting has been a major part of management studies and personality development. A goal-setting action involves a person thinking about the future and plan accordingly. The more specific and ambitious goals a person sets, the more likely he will improve upon his performance in a particular period of time. The goals should be challenging enough for a person to come up with various ideas and thought procedures in achieving the same. One has to come out of their comfort zones and laid-back attitude if one wants to achieve success and happiness in life. A person should be willingly accepting the set goal and not forced upon by someone else because it creates a conflict of thoughts in mind leading to non-achievement of the goal. One has to be made certain about what benefit or form of appreciation will they achieve after completing the goal, otherwise, there will be no motivation to work towards the goal.
For example, if a class 8 student is given a goal to study regularly so that he can prepare for class 10 exams well in advance and his parents tell that if he scores between 70 to 80%, he will be given a bicycle or a smartphone, then the student will happily work towards the goal of scoring good marks in the exam and he himself would prepare the timetable for his studies. The goal-setting should be realistic and not something that is unachievable or imaginary. One cannot work on a mediocre job and think of saving crores in his bank account. Thus, goals should be set by the individuals themselves by comparing their strengths and weaknesses and in no way, the goals should hamper a person’s health or life.
