Forgiveness is an act of releasing anger, hatred, resentment, grudge, and many other negative feelings that one goes through for a person who has done wrong to him or her. Forgiveness is important if one wants to have peace with themselves. Forgiveness can be immediate or it can be done at a later stage, but it has to be done if you want to live happily and with no negative feelings.
Positive psychology stresses the importance of forgiveness in one’s life. Forgiveness is vital for one’s physical and mental health. Forgiveness helps one to release all the negative emotions from their mind and heart and focus on good things in life that help them to succeed well and reach new heights. Goodness happens when a person has an optimistic mindset and thus, forgiving the mistakes of self and others and forgetting the past bad memories helps one to walk on the path of righteousness.
For example, Shiva was a honest and sincere man in his organization. He always completed the duties that were allocated to him and thought he was giving his best. However, Shiva’s boss was a cunning man who thought of exploiting Shiva’s skills, and thus, he increased the targets of his job without increasing his pay and giving him other benefits. Shiva was quite naive and innocent to understand his boss’s tactics of getting work done from him without any sort of appreciation even monetarily and emotionally.
Thus, Shiva continued doing the tasks given by his boss even he found it challenging. This made Shiva quite stressed out at work and feel low confident. He quit the job citing health reasons. A friend of Shiva asked him to consult a counselor with whom he can discuss whatever is bothering him freely. Shiva shared all the stories of how his boss used to humiliate him and exploit him despite him giving his best. The counselor asked Shiva to forgive his boss and forget him and start a new page in his life wherein he will be more assertive and confident about his skills and not allow anyone to make him feel less worthy. Shiva agreed and adopted forgiveness therapy whenever he found such challenging people in his life and eventually Shiva achieved all that he wanted to in his life.
