Being absent-minded means one is so engrossed in his thoughts that he is not aware of his surroundings or behaviors or actions. He was so engaged in watching TV that he forgot to off the gas where he had kept milk to be boiled. Being absent-minded is one of the growing problems in today’s times as one has to multi-task be it in their personal life or professional life, thus making them forget many important things that have to be completed by them.

A person who has the tendency or habit to forget things is usually called an absent-minded person. For example, Sharda had the habit to forget her doctor appointments because she didn’t care for her health much. Her priority in her life was to look after her family and keep the house running through her tailoring work. Thus, she noticed to check the dates and make appointments with the doctor for her further treatment.

Absent-mindedness is also one of the early symptoms of major health complications related to memory. Other terms used for absent-mindedness include distraction, preoccupied, abstracted, and absent, among others. It is a habit that a person’s mind was fixed on one thing so much that he forgot to do the other things that he had committed earlier. For example, the HR manager completely forgot to sign important papers allowing leaves for a few employees because she was preoccupied with the Navratri celebrations that she had to execute at the office single-handedly.

If you complain about absent-mindedness to your doctor, he may say it is natural to forget things on a timely basis because as one age, he becomes somewhat forgetful. It is a sign that one is aging. For example, a man in his 60s had many dental appointments that he had to visit alone because he lived alone. During a few of his dental appointments, he would forget his specs or bag or sometimes mobile on the table while he would be discussing with the dentist the aches and issues. However, after a few visits, his dentist advised him to keep a reminder wherein he would check whether he collected his belongings before he left the clinic. This tip helped him not just in his visits but wherever he went in the future.

Absent-mindedness doesn’t have to go through any medical treatment unless the forgetfulness is major like forgetting the name, address, age, important details of the family, etc. If the absent-mindedness is of small or petty things, then one can keep a note of the same. One can even repeat things that they have to remember. One can practice meditation and relaxation techniques over a period of time to reduce the stress levels in the mind. One can also take up a hobby or do some activities that will keep their mind focused and energized to reduce the effect of absent-mindedness.

For example, when Radha used to leave for the office sharp at 9 am, she used to forget to switch off the TV and lights because of the hurry and worry to reach the office. Thus, she started pasting a to-do list at the door that she could see before she closed the doors, helping her to do the needful without forgetting to switch off the important switches.
