So, what are win-win situations all about? A win-win situation occurs when both the parties involved in the negotiation are happy about the result. This mostly leads both parties to voluntarily accept the given situation. In a negotiation, one party who is getting paid for the services he has given is happy with the amount and the party who is using the services is also satisfied with what he has got. In conflict resolution scenarios, a win-win situation is usually the best resolution and it also involves both the parties getting the business they want.

A win-lose situation is when a party gets what he or she wants but the other party is extremely dissatisfied because their objectives are not achieved. Say, for example, you go to a movie theatre and pay a thousand bucks for popcorn and a movie ticket as the movie has a good star cast. However, the storyline is so depressing that you will so sad about the movie and the stars who are featured in the movie. This helps the movie theatre or the production company of the movie get the money that it has invested but your movie review or feedback about the movie as disgusting makes you the losing party in this arrangement.

Win-win situations allow positive interactions between both parties as they are willing to work together or are happy with the negotiation. Someone who has worked with a contractor feels satisfied with his services. When his friend wants a similar service, this person recommends his contractor because he is assured that the service would be good. This is similar to how nowadays online reviews are suggested to be filled by companies to build their trust and credibility in the market.

In order to create a win-win situation, one needs to understand or get hold of what the other person is looking for in the situation. Say, for example, you want your child to get good marks in the exams and study sincerely. You can offer your child to study well and in exchange, he or she will get a doll or motorbike toy that he has always been wanting to play with. This will help you get what you want and also help your child give his best to win in the exams.

The expectations set by both parties should be realistic and achievable. Say, for example, your child has been getting only 70% marks in his academic years, you need to ask him to score anywhere between 70-75% and not expect him to score 90% if he wants to get the gift from your end. This will create a mutually and understanding beneficial relationship.
