What is Panic Disorder?

Concept of the DayWhat is Panic Disorder?

Date:

Panic disorder or panic attack is a hasty episode of serious fear that leads to a lot of physical reactions even when there is no true cause or real danger involved in the situation. Panic attacks can be truly terrifying for the person who gets the same. When panic attacks happen, you may be thinking that you are not in control of the situation, getting a heart attack, or even going to die.

A panic attack ends for the person the moment they are less stressed or when the stressful event ends. Several people may have simply one or two panic attacks in their lifetimes. Because their physical reaction to panic comes when the stressful situation is unable to be handled.

People who go through severe panic attacks many times at unexpected and long periods in regular fear of another attack may suffer from a condition known as panic disorder. Panic attacks are not dangerous to life but it affects life’s quality and thus, such people should start treatment for curing and managing their disorder.

The symptoms of panic disorder include increased heart rate, fear of losing control, fear of death, sense of danger, shaking, sweating, hot flashes, cramping in the abdomen, headache, nausea, chest pain, numbness, detachment, feelings that don’t match with reality, chills, faintness, throat tightness among others. Panic attacks appear suddenly without giving any sort of warning. Panic attacks can appear in any situation and at any given time such as when you are sleeping soundly when you are walking at the mall, when you are driving a car or sitting in a rickshaw, when you are in a business meeting among others.

Panic attacks may not be the same for each individual who goes through the same. Panic attacks may make one very tired and fatigued once the episodes of a panic attack are complete. The worst thing about panic attacks is that the person who faces one panic attack at a severe level may have worries about going through similar experiences of panic disorder in the near future. That limits the person’s scope and understanding of the situation that may appear challenging to him or her in real life.

For example, a person who has trouble with high blood pressure may face panic attacks at regular intervals if left untreated. Panic attacks may paralyze the person’s thinking making him appear confused and even interpret real-life situations in a negative manner. An elderly person who doesn’t have movements to go out may have access to limited external information making him get afraid to adjust and adapt to the changing environments in today’s times.

Such people who have limited information may get panicked when they are told to change at an immediate level without giving them proper training and time to understand and accept the change. Thus, many times, we term elderly people to be quite rigid to accept changes in real-life. Their vulnerability and inability to adjust to new situations and surroundings put them at a major risk of panic disorders.
