UK approves Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID vaccine

London: The UK government on Wednesday authorized the use of Oxford University-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in the country to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

The Government has today accepted the recommendation from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to authorise Oxford University/AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine for use, the Department of Health and Social Care said in a statement.

This follows rigorous clinical trials and a thorough analysis of the data by experts at the MHRA, which has concluded that the vaccine has met its strict standards of safety, quality and effectiveness, it added.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) will also publish its latest advice for the priority groups to receive this vaccine.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune earlier this month had also applied to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), seeking the emergency use authorisation for the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine in the country.
