The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has given their nod to conduct a study on seeing the effects of mixing Covaxin and Covishield. The Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore will undertake the research.

In India, the vaccination effort against COVID-19 began with two vaccines: the adenovirus vector platform-based vaccine Covishield and the inactivated whole virion BBV152-Covaxin—and a homologous prime-boost strategy. However, 18 people in Siddarthnagar, Uttar Pradesh, received Covishield as the first jab and Covaxin as the second jab as part of a nationwide initiative. So, in addition to the 18 people who had received one dosage of Covishield and a second dose of Covaxin, the research enrolled 80 people who had gotten two doses of Covishield and 80 people who had received two doses of Covaxin. The research lasted from May through June of 2021.

A total of 300 healthy participants will take part in the study. ICMR evaluated the safety and immunogenicity profile of those who got either Covaxin or Covishield in the trial, and found it to be superior. According to the findings, vaccination with a combination of an adenovirus vector platform-based vaccine and an inactivated whole virus vaccine was not only safe but also resulted in improved immunogenicity.
