Government will consider all deaths due to coronavirus as covid death

New Delhi: After media reports pointed out a huge discrepancy in death figures in more than six states, the Center has said in an affidavit in the Supreme Court that all coronavirus deaths should be recorded as Covid deaths. The Center also promised action against doctors who did not follow this rule in an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court late last night.

Till now, only the death of Covid patients in hospitals was considered as death due to Covid. Even deaths in isolation at home or in hospital parking or at the gate were not counted as deaths from Covid. Because of this, there were discrepancies in the figures of deaths in lakhs.

The Center has filed an affidavit on a notice of the court. The court had sought the response of the Center on a petition filed for compensation and certification on the deaths due to Covid. It has been said in the petition that the cause of death is not mentioned in the death certificates of the victims, which makes it difficult for the families to get compensation.

The Centre’s decision to certify all Covid deaths comes at a time when many states have seen massive unaccounted death figures, raising the question whether states are underreporting their Covid victims?
