Centre creating 1-month buffer stock of Covid19 drugs as India likely to brace 3rd Wave in Aug

Centre and Union Health Ministry along with Chemical & Fertiliser ministry are building a buffer stock of emergency and life-saving drugs of Covid19 pandemic in India to avoid fatalities in the third wave which scientists are predicting may hit the country at the end of August. Centre is likely to procure 5 million vials of remdesivir injections ahead of the third wave.

One of the leading scientists from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Saturday hinted that the third wave of COVID19 may arrive in the country by end of August, though this time daily cases may hover around 1 lakh per day.

With India is likely to brace the third wave of Covid19, the Centre has is working on creating a month-long buffer stock of emergency & essential corona medicines like Favipiravir and Remdesivir along with enough supply of oxygen.

Apart from the emergency and life-saving medicines, the government is also building a stock of common drugs like antibiotics, paracetamol, and vitamins as per the BS report.

“The Govt is also purchasing about 5 million vials of remdesivir with advance payment ahead of the third wave.

Professor Samiran Panda, the (ICMR) scientist who predicted the third wave has said that this time the virus does not mutate further, but the situation will be almost similar to the first wave of the pandemic.

Professor Panda is the director of the ICMR’s epidemiology and communicable diseases division.

Scientists and doctors are of the view that the third wave may not be as deadly and devastating as the second wave in the country due to vaccination and stocking of essential drugs and availability of ample oxygen, Dr.Panda believes that slow vaccination and ease of restrictions will bring the third wave. Since people are gathering without following Covid_19 protocols may result in an increase in cases.

The prediction about the third wave in India was made by the Imperial College London and the ICMR collaborated study based on mathematical modeling.
