What is Worry?

Concept of the DayWhat is Worry?

Date:

“Why are you worrying? Please stop taking stress.”

“Don’t you worry as things will be fine soon?”

These are the statements you might have heard from people’s mouths in everyday language quite frequently. Worry is a term that talks about the increased tension or stress in a person’s mind. Worry can put off a lot of things on a person’s to-do list because he or she is not getting the required energy to complete their tasks.

Worry can be about something that is uncertain and worry can be a habit as well. Worry is the state of being tensed or troubled over actual or possible problems or issues. Worry cannot have a specific definition because people worry over things in different ways due to different perceptions, health issues, and understanding of a particular topic.

For example, a young lady I had met in my office always used to worry about her mother’s poor health. She used to call her mother every two hours to enquire if she has eaten or done her home chores on time. When asked further, I understood that her mother stays alone and more than the mother’s health, this young girl worried that her mother would face any possible issues.

Once when this young girl forgot to call her mother due to a busy meeting, her mother worried if her young girl is fine or not. She immediately called on the office landline to enquire about where her daughter is and what she is doing. This is the extent of worry that people go through due to a lack of communication or having full knowledge about a particular topic or thing.

It means both the mother and daughter could have worked on the self-esteem and confidence issues that are bothering them. Reading news also puts many people in a worry mode. For example, they imagine worst-case scenarios that may not happen at all. I had met an aged woman who used to worry about each and everything in her life. If there is a sudden electricity cut, she would worry about water issues. If there is an unexpected expense, then she would worry about her finances.

If there is news about rains happening in the city, she would buy everything beforehand and stock things for the next three months till the rainy season ends. Worry can also lead people to go to extreme situations. They may end up writing their will at a young age itself. Worry’s causes include difficult childhood experiences, adulthood challenging experiences, and things like emotional abuse or physical abuse.

Worry can be avoided or distracted if the person knows how to manage their negative emotions. Worry can be reduced by practicing deep breathing, sharing your fears and anxieties with your friends and family members, doing meditation on a regular basis, practicing thankfulness, and also keeping an emotional journal that records your everyday issues. Sleeping well and having a consistent schedule for doing your everyday things can also help reduce worry in your life. Controlling your worrying habit can also help you reduce the chances of developing high blood pressure and getting a heart attack or stroke.
